Opened in 2005, the arena was built on an underdeveloped northern site where cows once grazed. Construction workers joked that the glowing façade looked like “a giant air mattress” before the LEDs were installed. Its ETFE-panel exterior turned the building into a luminous landmark visible from the Autobahn. The project triggered massive upgrades in transit, roads, and public spaces, reshaping the Fröttmaning district. Businesses and housing followed, transforming the zone into Munich’s modern gateway. The arena is now both a sports icon and an architectural spectacle. And it resounds to “Stern des Südens.”
